Leabel, Simon (26 MAY 1843 - 8 MAR 1938)

Funeral services were conducted at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at nine o’clock Friday, for Simon Leabel, who died Tuesday morning at the A. J. Braun home where he had lived since 1910. High Mass was sung and the sermon delivered by his grandson Father Pius C. P. of St. Paul’s Monastery, Detroit, Mich., formerly Arthur A. Leabel of Loyal. Father Alois Zinthefer pastor of St. Anthony’s assisted in the sanctuary. He was laid to rest in the parish cemetery at the side of his son.

Mr. Leabel had been in poor health recently, and old age enacted its last toll. He was born in Germany, May 26, 1843, and as a child emigrated with his family to Milwaukee. Married to Barbara Klitz in 1867, he lived for many years at Jefferson, Wis. About thirty five years ago he came to live at Loyal, with his son Samuel, who died in 1909.

He is survived by one sister Mrs. Mary Kiltz, five daughters, Barbara, Mary, Katherine, and Bertha now residing in California, and Anna Leabel of Milwaukee; also thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren. Mrs. Percy F. Voight and her four children are the only Loyal residents.

With the return of warm Genial spring, we shall miss his familiar figure, bent, and gray, for he loved the outdoors. In his youthful manhood he was a commercial fisherman, and later worked as a stone and brick mason. In recent years his hobbies were fishing and gardening. He loved the water, and Father Pius in his panegyric, likened his life to a river that passes by,-- not a shallow turbulent stream, noisy and churning empty foam, but like to a wide deep stream that flows quietly, placid and smooth in its surface. There may have been little glamour in his plain exterior, but his noble spirit, and generous heart revealed a great soul. Loyal’s oldest resident will be missed.
