Romang, Elise K. (18 MAY 1853 - 23 SEP 1943)

Mrs. Elise Romang, 90, a resident of Athens, Wis. for 55 years, died at 6:15 o’clock this morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Keiner, Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.). Death followed a week’s illness.

Mrs. Romang, nee Elise Katherine Steffen, daughter of the late Johann and Katherine (Halel) Steffen, was born in Bort, Bern, Switzerland, May 18, 1853, and was married at Gsteiz, Switzerland April 22, 1875, to Gottfried Romang, who preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1914.

In March 1884, the Romang family came to the United States and settled on a farm at Black Creek Falls, no Athens, where they lived until 1906, when they moved to the village of Athens. After her husband’s death in 1914, Mrs. Romang continued to make her home there until May 1939, when she came to Greenwood to make her home with the Christ Keiners.

A charter member of Christ Evangelical Church and its Ladies Aid Society at Athens, Mrs. Romang is survived by four sons, Charles Romang, Oconomowoc, and Gottfried August, and Emanuel Romang Sr., all of Athens; two daughters, Mrs. Christ (Elise) Keiner, Greenwood, and Mrs. E.O. (Louise0 Plisch, Athens; 25 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, an infant son, three brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death.

The body will lie in state at the Central Wisconsin Cooperative Funeral Home at Marshfield until Sunday, when funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock that afternoon at Christ Evangelical Church, Athens, the Rev. O.H. Ortwein, Wausau, officiating. Interment will take place in the Athens Cemetery.
