Spaete, Gustave (21 April 1864 - 18 Jan. 1940)

Purchased 40 acres of virgin timer land, adding to the original purchase, as finances permitted, until the farm consisted of 207 acres. In addition to the work on the farm, Mr. Spaete carried on his trade. During the winters of lumbering days, he did blacksmithing in the camps. Throughout the years he diverted little from the strenuous life of the earlier day, from almost the entire farm had been cleared by himself and family.

Mr. Spaete is survived by his wife, and two children: Carl, residing on the home farm, and Mrs. Joseph Horehled, also of Washburn, six grandchildren, one brother and three sisters in Germany.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 21, at the home and at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Neillsville, Wis. The Rev. E. A. Klemp of Alma Center, who serves Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Washburn, of which Mr. Spaete has been a member since 1901, conducted the rites. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: Edward Siebold, Ray Kutchie, Ernest Ulrich, Julius Lenz, Helmuth Schultz and John Sonhelm.
