Lawrence 'Larry' Stabnow

NEILLSVILLE -- Larry Stabnow, 79, of Neillsville, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, in the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, Wis.

Family will greet friends from noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Interment will be Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, in the Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, with military rites accorded by the Greenwood Veterans Council.

He was born May 10, 1927, in Greenwood, the son of Walter and Theresa (Griese) Stabnow. In 1945, at the age of 17 he entered the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1947. Larry then enlisted into the United States Coast Guard. During the early part of his career with the Coast Guard, Larry worked as the keeper of the Lighthouse on Ausable Point in Grand Marais, Mich. He was united in marriage to Jainnine Guertin in 1949, they later divorced. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1970, Larry began working on big boats while living in Ketichan, Alaska and later Seattle, Wash. He worked on the Alaska State Ferry and the Madaduska. In 1975, he moved back to Wisconsin.

He is survived by a son, Michael (Pati) Stabnow of Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Walter Stabnow of St. Paul, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
