Mrs. George Iffland died suddenly last Monday forenoon, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Mayo, in Houghtonburg. She was apparently enjoying good health, and was assisting Mrs. Mayo with the morning’s work about the house. She had stepped into the sitting room to speak to her husband and Mr. May, and returned to the kitchen. Mrs. Iffland made a remark to Mrs. Mayo, and fell lifeless into the latter’s arms.

Mr. and Mrs. Iffland came from Fairchild, Tuesday, Feb. 23rd, where they were making a temporary home with their daughter, Mrs. L.J. Laffe, and, after spending a few days here went into Houghtonburg for a visit among the old neighbors. They had been spreading cheer along the way, having s social time with old friends at a time when the farmers were not busy, taking care of the sick, and encouraging the lonely.

The sudden death of Mrs. Iffland was a great shock to her family, and has brought sorrow to all who knew her.

The remains were brought to her home in the village (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.) Tuesday afternoon, to await the arrival of her son Dewey, from Great Falls, Mont., before burial.

Funeral services are being held at the town hall this Friday afternoon, and burial will be in the cemetery in Houghtonburg.

Jennie Elizabeth Iffland, nee Colburn, was born on a farm near Arcadia, Wis., March 29, 1872, the elder child of Sylvester and Georgia Colburn, and passed away, almost without a moment’s warning, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Mayo, south of Humbird, March 15, 1926, aged 54 years, 11 months and 15 days.

When she was fourteen years of age her parents moved into the village of Arcadia, where she attended Arcadia High School and completed the prescribed course of study. On her 21st birthday, March 29, 1893, she was married at Arcadia, to George Henry Iffland of the town of Alma, Jackson Co., Wis.

The newly married couple made their first home on the Iffland farm in the town of Alma, where they remained for two years, during which time Hugh, the first born child, came to them. They then moved onto the Nelson Colburn farm, which they operated for a period of three years. While residing there Harry and Mayme were born. Dewey, their youngest child, was born after they had returned to the old home farm where the family home was maintained for many years. In the spring of 1918 they disposed of the farm and moved to the village of Humbird, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Iffland is survived by her mother, Mrs. Silas Delano, Humbird; an only brother, Jesse G. Colburn, Altoona; four children, Hugh Wallace, Beloit, Harry George, Humbird, Mrs. Mayme Laffe, Fairchild, Dewey Sheldon, Great Falls, Mont., and one grandchild, Sheldon Laffe of Fairchild. Her father passed away very suddenly in 1894, while visiting at the home of his brother, Nelson, near Humbird.

Mrs. Iffland was a kind and loving wife and mother, a woman who had blossomed into the fullness of womanhood, even as a beautiful flower, to scatter sunshine and gladness along the pathway of life. Her first thought were ever for her family and her friends whom she loved so well. There was no task too arduous or too difficult for her to perform for a friend. When the Angel of Death came with a final summons, she was found ministering to friends, not a stone’s throw from the farm home where nearly all of her married life had been spent. Out of a multitude of kind deeds performed she has erected an enduring monument which shall long abide in the hearts of her friends.

In social life, Mrs. Iffland was always a willing and unselfish worker, never shirked responsibilities, and gave at all time the best that she could. At the time of her death she was Worthy Matron of Humbird Chapter No. 109 Eastern Star, a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Alma Center, and a charger member of the Farmers Life Insurance Association of Humbird.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon, March 19th, with services in the town hall, which were attended by a large number of sorrowing friends, and many floral tributes betokened the affection the community had for her. Rev. A.J. Coram preached the sermon, and the burial rites of the eastern Star followed. Burial was in the Houghtonburg Cemetery. Relatives who were present at the burial were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kelly, Osseo; Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Iffland, W.W. Owen, Watertown; Mrs. Berg, Mrs. Scheller, Marshfield; Mrs. C.E. Bollom, Blair; John Kiipp, Dousman; and friends from Altoona, Fairchild and Merrillan.

A host of warm friends will greatly miss the genial smile and pleasant companionship of Mrs. Iffland. From all there goes to the bereft ones a message of sincerest sympathy.
