Ayer, Verland (8 SEP 1914 - 23 JUN 1934)

Verland Ayer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs., Walter Ayer of the Town of Unity, was killed almost instantly Saturday afternoon, as the violent wind blew over a large barn, on the Ayer farm.

Verland was cultivating corn when the storm came up. He unhitched the team, took them to the barn and was about to go the house, when the barn crashed.

Mr. and Mrs. Ayer, who were in the house, rushed to the wreckage and found Verland lying on the cement floor with two timbers, 12 inches thick and about 30 feet long lying across his body, one on his chest and one across his legs. His father raised the heavy timbers off his body, and with the assistance of his wife carried Verland to the house where he died in their arms a few minutes later.

Funeral services were held from the Arthur Wisnosky home at 1:30 P. M. Tuesday and at the Riplinger Lutheran Church at 2:00 P. M., Rev. W. Gamb, officiating.

The deceased was born on September 8, 1914. He attended the rural school, high school at Riplinger for two years and Loyal for two years, graduating from the Loyal high school in 1933.

He is survived by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
