Pig Roast Saturday to Benefit Pat Hubing (2019)

Pat Hubing

By Valerie Brecht

Neillsville residents and others are looking forward to “paying it forward.”

The ninth annual Pay it Forward Pig Roast will be this Saturday, May 18, from noon until 8 p.m., at Snyder County Park, W8046 Arndt Road, Neillsville. The event will be a fundraiser for Pat Hubing, who has stage four lung cancer.

There will be a doubles beanbag tournament at 1 p.m. Also, around 1 p.m. there will be hot dogs and baked good for sale. Kids and adults will have the chance to play Plinko through the afternoon and there will be a silent auction and raffles. Some of the items will include a quilt, Packer tickets and several varieties of wine. The Motorhead Mafia will donate the pig for the event, as they did last year. Dinner will be a round 5 p.m. For the meal, people are asked to bring a dish to pass.

The event has grown over the years, said Tammy Horn, event organizer. It all started about 10 years ago when Tammy’s husband Darin had cancer. The community was very supportive, said Tammy, and put on a bowling fundraiser for Darin. When Darin finished chemotherapy, she said, the coup[le put on a pig roast as a way to thank their fmily and friends.

“It was our way to give back because the community helped us,” said Tammy.

The next year the couple decided to have a pig roast again to benefit someone with cancer.

“We have been through cancer and know what it’s like, so we wanted to help with that,” she said.

It became a tradition that more and more people have gotten involved with each year.

For example, a group from Stanley that was camping one year came to check out the pig roast and since then, every year they have come back and donated to it. The past three years, about $14,000 has been raised each year from the event.

“Every year, the campground is full,” said Tammy.

This year’s recipient of the pig roast is a 52-year resident of Neillsville. Pat is married to her husband, John, and has two married sons, Paul of Neillsville and Scott of Middleton. She worked at Neillsville Bank, M&I Bank, Cenex and Pamida and is now retired.

She was a 4-H leader for several years and still enters items in the open class at the fair each year. She is treasurer of the Clark County Master Gardeners and enjoys keeping her own garden. She also is an active member of St. Mary’s Church where she has served as president, vice president and treasurer. She enjoys crocheting and reading.

After taking a fall in December, Pat’s hip was bothering her. Her husband told her she should go get an x-ray and so she did. After that, she had a CT scan in the first part of January where they found the cancer.

Pat has had six chemotherapy treatments since then but found out they weren’t working. She has since been approved to take a pill for treatment.

Pat said she has been blessed by the outpouring of support she’s received from family and friends since her diagnosis.

“I have received cards from people that I never expected to hear from them,” she said.

“Between the cards, prayers and support – a person needs it more than you think.”

It was mid-March that Pat was asked if she would like to be the recipient for this year’s pig roast proceeds. Her and her husband talked it over and agreed. Pat said she was very appreciative. She has attended the event herself for the past five or six years.

“It was neat to see it come full circle,” she said. “I feel very honored.”

The pig roast will be held rain or shine. For updates on the event, visit the “Pay It Forward Pig Roast” Facebook page
