Hemp, Ernest H. E. (15 May 1869 - 12 July 1936)

**First part is cut off. ---- Hemp, was born in Germany, May 15, 1869. He came with his parents and other members of the family to this country in 1872. Three years later they came to Clark County and settled in the Town of Weston where deceased grew to manhood. In his younger manhood he worked in lumber camps, the logging industry still being one of the leading businesses of this region.

On May 12, 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss Augusta Hagedorn, at Globe Evangelical Lutheran Church, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Thurn. They settled on land near the old Hemp home and developed a fine farm, remaining there until a few years ago, when they moved to Neillsville, Wis.

Mr. Hemp is survived by his wife and six children: Elsie, Mrs. John Poppe, Globe; Clara, Mrs. Theo. Mitte, Globe; Paul Hemp, Rochester, Minn.; Leo Hemp, Globe; Arthur Hemp, Sparta; John Hemp on the home farm, Globe; also nine grandchildren and four brothers, Otto, Fred, Frank and Anthony.

Mr. Hemp was a fine type of citizen, industrious, honest, a kind husband and father and a helpful neighbor. He bore the long months of his last illness with almost unbelievable cheerfulness and patience, although he suffered intense pain much of the time.

Brief funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 o’clock, July 15, conducted by Rev. Wm. A. Baumann, Paul Blum and Mrs. Baumann rendering the beautiful vocal duet, "Harre Meine Seele." They also sang "Wo Findet Die Seele, Die Heimat, Die Ruh," at the church service just before the assemblage was given as opportunity to view th remains of her loved one, neighbor and friend for the last time.

Pallbearers were chosen from among the friends of the deceased namely: Henry Bartell, Carl Lewerenz, Sr., Albert Kalsow, William Naedler, William Foemmel and Albert Degener, the flower girls being, Leona Kalsow, Louise Hagedorn, Evelyn Hagedorn, Mrs. Paul Blum and Mrs. Paul Bartell.

Those who had gathered for the home service, which was conducted in the German language, marched at St. John’s Lutheran church in groups. The procession was headed by the flower girls, followed by the pall bearers carrying the casket, the wife of the deceased on the arms of her two oldest sons, Leo and Paul Hemp, the other children and their husbands and wives, and relatives and friends.

Those from out of town who came for the funeral are: Mrs. Leo Grap and children, Clarence Marion and Melvin of Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kraunn, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hemp and son, Carl of Rochester, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hemp and son Donald, Sparta; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lemke, Milwaukee.
