Rosekrans, Laura Elizabeth (9 Dec. 1871 - 22 Jan. 1936)

Mrs. Laura E. Rosekrans, mother of Dr. M. C. Rosekrans of Neillsville, died suddenly at her home in the village of Hixton, Wednesday, Jan. 22.

The following sketch of her life was prepared by Mrs. Rosekrans herself some years ago and was found among her papers:

Laura Elizabeth Pattridge was born on Dec. 9, 1871, at Rubicoh, Dodge County, Wis. in 1872 or 1873 she moved with her parents to the Mosher farm near Taylor, Wis., and in the spring of 1878 to Garden Valley to the Cotton farm, where she resided until Jan. 22, 1893. Here she was united in marriage to Lee Rosekrans of North Branch, where they lived until 1904. They moved to Hixton, Wis., April 8, 1904, where she has lived since. To this union were born: Milton Charles, Victor Earl, Emmet Cole, Esther Eda. All four children were born on the farm in North Branch.

On July 7, 1907 her husband preceded her in death. In February, 1919, her brother, Ernest E., passed away and on April 27, 1931 her brother Willis L.; passed away. Her father preceded her in Oct. 1908 and her mother in August 1911.

Although active and apparently in good health, she had also quite definite preparations for her funeral, which were carried out as far as possible.

Services were held Monday afternoon, Rev. Schroeder of Blair, officiating. A local quartette of her choosing furnished the music.

There were many out of town relatives and friends in attendance among whom were the following: all the children - Victor Rosekrans, of Watertown, S. D.; Dr. M. C. Rosekrans and wife, Dr. Sarah Rosekrans, Neillsville; Mrs. Esther Davis, Waterloo, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rosekrans, Wisconsin Rapids; also Fay Amos, Madison; an aunt, Edith O’Neill, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Oyes, and Mrs. John Knuppen, all of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Van Gorden, Neillsville; Mrs. Dunn and Philip Dunn of Alma Center; Mrs. Barnes of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Jones, Black River Falls.

Many beautiful floral tributes were sent, several fine ones from Neillsville friends.

Dr. and Mrs. Andresen of Hixton kept open house to entertain those from out-of-town, serving dinner and also later lunch.

Mrs. Rosekrans was a lady of charming manner and fine culture, and had made a number of friends here during her visits in Neillsville, Wis.

A fact not generally known, as her ability as a writer, having written some beautiful verses. In a fraternal magazine, "The Farmers Life," was published one of her little poems, which we take pleasure in quoting

Touch O’Gold

We get the sweetest comfort

When we wear the oldest shoe.

We love the old friends more

Than we’ll ever love the new.

The old songs are more appealing

To the wearied heart. And so

We find the sweetest music

In the tunes of long ago.

For, there’s a kind of mellow sweetness

In a good thing growing old;

Each year that rolls around it

Leaves an added Touch O’Gold.
