Purgett, Ray E. (4 Aug. 1909 - 14 April 1986)

Ray E. Purgett, age 76, of Rte. 2, Owen, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he had been a patient at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 1966. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Owen, Wis. Rev. Raymond Toegersen will officiate and burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery, Withee.

Pallbearers will be his sons, Maynard and Michael, and grandsons, Scott and Todd Purgett, Duane and Glen Churkey, and Greg Purgett.

Visitation will be held at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.

Ray E. Purgett was born on August 4, 1909 in Watseka, Illinois to Eugene and Maude (Murphy) Purgett. On July 4, 1937, he married Eleanor Wood at Medford. They lived in Ladysmith following their marriage, where he was employed in road construction. He also sold Fuller Brush products.

They farmed in the Town of Hixon on his parent’s farm from 1943 until 1960. Besides farming, Mr. Purgett was involved in a variety of enterprises during his lifetime. He dehorned cattle for many years, did custom combining for 18 years, was a dealer for Kaltenberg seed corn, and an equipment dealer for Hedfund Manufacturing. He founded Purgett Harvesting Enterprises, which he sold to his grandsons Scott and Todd on January 1, 1965.

Mr. Purgett was a member of the United Church of Christ and their men’s choir.

Surviving, besides his wife Eleanor, are one daughter, Nadine Churkey, Owen; two sons, Maynard, Abbotsford, and Michael, Greenwood; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Norman and Wayne; three grandchildren; one brother, and one sister.
