Edmund F. "Ed" Maier, 83, died ay Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation, Eau Claire, on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp. The Rev. Keith Apfelbeck and The Rev. Michael Mertens served as co-celebrants. Burial was in New St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Jeff Konieczny, Wes Konieczny, Scott Maier, Brad Maier, Nick Maier, Adam Olson, Taylor Olson and Nathan Maier. Honorary pallbearers were his grandsons, Brandon Maier and Jason Maier.

Edmund Francis Maier was born on Aug. 22, 1922, in Thorp, to John and Helen (nee Schmidt) Maier. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at St. Bernard’s Catholic School. After completing his education, he hauled machinery and cattle to and from Iowa. He then worked in the harvest fields in Southern Minnesota and central North Dakota from 1936 to 1939. He returned to Thorp, in 1939, and drove school bus until the summer of 1942. While driving bus, he met his future wife. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he received his basic training at Homestead, Fla., He was then stationed at Morrison Field Air Force Base, in West Palm Beach, Fla., as an aerial engineer and crew chief. He was united in marriage to Margaret B. "Marge" Bartosiewicz on Oct. 2, 1943, at Morrison Field Air Force Base. In 1944, he was stationed at Hamilton Field in San Rafael, Calif. After his honorable discharge on Dec. 14, 1945, they moved to Chicago, where he worked as a buffer and polisher. In February of 1950, they moved back to the town of Withee and bought and bought a farm, where he served on the town board, plowed snow and maintained roads. They farmed for 37 years and raised a family of seven children. They sold the farm to their son, Terry, and retired in August of 1987. A hobby farm was purchased nearby where he resided until the time of his death. His wife, Marge, died on April 27, 2002. He was member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, served as a board member and chairman of A.S.C.S. for 33 years, served as the town of Withee chairman for two terms and several years on the board, was a member of the Thorp American Legion, was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and served on the board for the Farmers Home Administration. He had many interests including working in his garage, collecting antique farm equipment and especially spending time with his family.

He will be sadly missed by four daughters, Carol Konieczny, Thorp, Debbie (Dale) Olson, Abbotsford, Cindy (Rich Dusick) Maier, Stanley, and Noreen (Dave) Prokopiak, Thorp; three sons, Butch (Sharon) Maier, Union Grove, Larry Maier, Thorp, and Terry Maier, Thorp; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Norm (Mary) Maier, Brookfield, Jack (Myrna) Maier, Milwaukee, and Ken (Peggy) Maier, Green Bay; and two sisters, Marge Sonnentag, Thorp, and Merce Borton, Eau Claire.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Marge; and two brothers, Leonard Maier and Jerry Maier.

Thorp Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
