Hug, Maxine (25 MAR 1920 - 16 OCT 2005)

Maxine Shafer "Macky" Hug, 85, Loyal, died peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Rice Lake, on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005. A celebration of her life will be held at the Loyal United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m.

Maxine Shafer Garvue was born on March 25, 1920, in Dorchester, Wis. Her parents were Ollie and Sylvia (nee Shafer) Garvue. She was raised by her grandparents, John and Emma Shafer, as her mother died at a very young age. After graduating from Dorchester High School, she received a degree in business education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Beloved by her students, she taught for a short time in Dorchester and Cornell, before spending close to 35 years as the business instructor at Loyal High School.

An outstanding athlete herself, she never missed an opportunity to watch the Packers, the Badgers, the Blugolds, or the Greyhounds. She also looked forward to getting together with her bridge friends. She will be remembered for her positive attitude no matter what the situation. She married Norval Walter Hug on June 28, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Vale, Nashua, Iowa.

Always putting her family first, she is survived by two daughters, Krisan Kay (Paul) Vine, Rice Lake, and Major Jenifer Jo Hug, Fort McCoy; and one son, Michael Walter Hug, St. Paul Park; her brother, Walter Garvue, Duluth; three grandchildren, Elise Shafer Melrose, Madison, Michael John Melrose, Minneapolis, and Michael Norval Hug, St. Paul Park; and her son-in-law, John (Margaret) Melrose, Eau Claire.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and her special friend, Dr. W. L. Lee.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials in her memory be made out to the Maxine S. Hug Scholarship Fund, which will aid an LHS senior business student pursuing a post-secondary business degree.
