Fields, Helen M. (12 MAY 1850 - 27 FEB 1933)

Helen Maria Miles was born to Thomas and Clarissa Miles on May 12, 1850, near Verona in Dane County, Wisconsin. In that family were born nine children, Mrs. Eva Fields, Humbird, Wisconsin, being the sole survivor. The deceased came to this community more than 55 years ago as a school teacher. On March14, 1885, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Delbert Fields of Freemont, Clark County, being early pioneers in that section. It is noteworthy that they endured early hardships to which many of us are foreign. Their land covered with woods, their first home a log cabin with no floor and no windows, was their start together. To this union were born four sons and one daughter, three of which have gone on before and two remain, Edgar of Owen, and Reuben of Granton. She leaves four grandchildren, two of which live in Canada and two in the States. The husband of the deceased preceded her in death, August 15, 1909.

There are also a host of other relatives and friends who live to mourn the death of the aged mother. She loved flowers and the folks around the country can testify to the kindness in giving them, which no doubt will be gentle reminders in time to come of her generousness. Although nearly 83 years of age, she worked up until last year. On October 5, 1932, she came to live with her niece, Mrs. Cora Miles.

On Monday evening, February 27, 1933, she passed from this life at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 15 days, having suffered for several months from heart trouble and dropsy.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 1:45 P. M. at the Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Carl Gibson officiated. Burial was in the Loyal cemetery.

Pallbearers were Fred Gross, Grant Snyder, Ira Clouse, W. R. Happe, Sr., Walter Hopp, and Gordon Davis.

The songs, "Safe In the Arms of Jesus," "There’s No Disappointment in Heaven," and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," were beautifully sung by Mrs. Gibson and Miss Selma Schaeff.
