Funk, Harmon H. (20 Dec 1898 - 16 OCT 1918)

Harmon Hubert Funk was born Dec. 20, 1898, at Oakley, Macon Co., Ill., where he lived until nine years of age, moving to Iowa with his parents, where they resided until almost four years ago, when they moved to their present home in the town of Alma, Jackson Co., Wis. Harmon was an unusually bright and steady boy, never out of employment and always ready to help others. He attended high school in Humbird, Clark County, Wis. for almost two years, and helped with the farm work when most needed. In the spring of 1918 he graduated from the Sweeny Auto School of Kansas City, with the expectation of becoming a mechanic when the call from his country came. He looked forward with pleasure to when he would be in the service of his country, for which he already had his call. He was a regular attendant of the Houghtonburg Sunday school, in which he took deep interest in learning the teachings of his Master. He was a member of the True Blue for Boys, also the Modern Woodmen of America, being a member about a year. He departed this life leaving father, mother and two brothers, Oren C. and Amer A. to mourn his death. He was aged 19 years, 10 months and 26 days.

Such is the brief life history of Harmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Funk, who died at seven o'clock Wednesday evening after a brief illness of pneumonia. He was not ill Tuesday and his brother Oren left for Iowa, expecting to remain for some time. He was taken sick and the best medical attention possible given him, but to no avail. The burial was held in the Houghtonburg Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, Rev. Upson of Merrillan, officiating. The entire community extends sincerest sympathies to the heartbroken parents in the loss of their son.
