Hardwick, Richard (25 Augl 1874 - 1 JUN 1916)

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Hardwick, who live in the Harvey house (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.), was saddened Thursday evening by the death of their son Richard, which occurred at about eight o'clock. The cause of death was enlargement of the heart. The deceased came here from Rochester, Minn., four weeks ago, whither he had been seeking medical aid and has been unable to leave the house the greater part of the time. Knowing that the time for his final summons was drawing nigh he came to the home of his parents to spend his last days. Mr. Hardwick had been ill with the disease which terminated in his death for the past seventeen years, but had attended to his work up to last winter.

The home of Mr. Hardwick was at Hannah, Alberta, Canada, where he owned a large dairy farm. A wife and three children survive, the wife and one child being at his bedside at the time of his death.

The remains will be taken to Brandon, Iowa for burial, leaving here Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Short services will be held here at 11:00 o'clock and burial services at Brandon at 9 a.m. Monday.

Richard C. Hardwick was born in Buchanan Co., Iowa, Aug. 25, 1874, and died at Humbird, Clark County, Wis., June 1, 1916. He was united in marriage to Julia M. Monroe Feb. 7, 1900, and to this union were born four children, one dying in infancy. In the spring of 1911, he moved with his family to Hanna, Alberta, Canada, where he lived on a farm. He has been in failing health for the last five years, gradually growing worse. All that medical aid could do was done, but to no avail. Knowing that the end was close at hand he, with his wife and little daughter Ruth, came May 2nd, to spend his last days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hardwick at Humbird. About two weeks before his death he sought and professed to find the Lord as his savior, giving as a testimony the afternoon before his death, that should he die that night he would meet the Lord in peace.

During his illness he endured the pain with almost superhuman patience, no word of complaint being heard from him at any time. The deceased leaves to mourn a wife, three children, his parents, two brothers, William of Humbird and Thomas of Hanna, Alberta, Canada; three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Grattan, Mrs. Sarah Roth of Jessup, Iowa, and Mrs. Hazel Nenenkirk of Strawberry Point, Iowa, and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held at the F. M. Church in this village last Sunday forenoon, conducted by Rev. J. K. Peckham, and were attended by a large number of sympathizing friends. The remains were taken to Brandon, Iowa for burial.
