Carter, Rachel E. (4 Mar 1859 - 25 Feb 1927)

Funeral services for Mrs. William T. Carter, age 67, who died Friday morning, Feb. 25, 1927, were held Monday afternoon at her home at 5020 Dodge St., Duluth, Rev. Edward Stodghill officiating. Interment was made at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, Wis.

Rachel Ellen Crye was born near Kokomo, Ind., March 4, 1859, she being the youngest of thirteen children born to John and Edith Crye. In 1865 the Crye family settled near Knapp, Wis., where on Dec. 25, 1876, she was married to William T. Carter. In 1894 they located in Glenwood City, Wis., remaining there until 1908. From 1908 to 1923 they made their home at Owen, Clark County, Wis., and from there moved to Duluth, where they observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Dec. 25th last.

A year or more ago Mrs. Carter began to show signs of a physical and mental breakdown. She was operated upon last spring for internal goiter, and for several months seemed to improve, but more serious factors of disintegration were at work in her system and it was necessary to place her under constant care of a physician. This again proved unavailing, and the end finally came on Friday last. During her entire illness her husband was at her bedside, and it was one happy memory in a dark period of affliction that for a brief time before the end she conversed with him and her mind was completely clear, which it had not been for many months.

Three sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Carter, Claude of Ladysmith, Wis.; Harvey of Milwaukee, Wis.; Dallas of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. George Hepburn of Tomahawk, Wis.; and Mrs. Frank St. John of Mondovi, Wis., all of who are living and were present at the funeral. She is survived by her husband, all of the above children, two sisters, Mrs. La Fayette Lightfoot of Fairchild, Wis., and Mrs. Henry Kesler of Spooner, Wis., and one brother, Mr. Zack Crye of Lemington, Wis.

Among the out of town relatives present at the funeral were Mr. William Milliron of Knapp, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. La Fayette Lightfoot of Cloquet, Minn.; and Leon and Faye Crye of Lemington, Wis.

My mother's maiden name was Lyle Edith Crye. Her father was Jake Crye. They lived in Birchwood Wisconsin but were from Knapp (I think).
