Chas, Sheldon and H. F. Sargent returned on Sunday last from Neillsville where they had been in attendance at the County Fair. Mr. Sheldon brought back with him his horse "William S", the premium stallion of Clark County and winner of second money in the trotting race for Clark county horses to be driven by their owners. Messrs. Sheldon and Sargent complained of unfairness and partiality being shown by judges in the last heat in starting the horses when "William S" was a rod or more behind, and in favoring Neillsville horses throughout all the heats in giving them the inside of the course and seeing that they had fair starts without caring whether horses from other parts of the county had fairness show them or not. They however, speak highly of the gentlemanly treatment they received from Jas. O'Neill and also from Free Lindsay who furnished a sulky for "Wm S". In regard to the unfairness of the judges in the trotting race Mr. Sheldon is corroborated by all Thorp people who witnessed the race, and having taken pains to make inquiries in regard to the matter we have wondered greatly that "Wm S" was not sought to be barred from entering the race on the grounds that he came from the proposed county of Rusk. Thorp people very seldom expect favors of Neillsville; yet they should be treated with fairness at least, no one would attempt to deny. Mr. Sheldon says he will enter "Wm S" for the race in 1886 and will know in advance what to expect from prejudiced judges picked by the owners of Neillsville stock.
