Leatherdale, Luke (28 JUN 1830 - 1 Sep 1919)

Luke Leatherdale died on Monday, Sept. 1, 1919 at the Soldiers Home at Waupaca, of heart failure. He had bee there only eight days and was in usual health when suddenly the end came without a moment's warning.

He was born in England June 28, 1830 and came to this country in the year 1853. For the past 49 years he has been a resident of Clark County, Wis.

In 1854 he was united in marriage to Miss Francis Allerton, who preceded him in death by twenty-three years.

He is survived by two daughters and one son, Gertrude E. Miles, Bentley, Alberta, Canada, Alice A. Siever, Chico, Cal. and Attilia of Loyal, fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Emma J. and Agnes A., and a son Amos B., preceded him in death.

After coming to the United States Mr. Leatherdale lived at Lake Mills, Wis., also ran the Allen Hotel in Loyal, Clark County, Wis. for one year about forty years ago. For a few years he lived at Spencer, where he and his wife united with the Baptist Church.

The most of his life however was spent on his farm near Spokeville, Clark County. The past few years he has made his home with his son Atillia in this village.

In 1902 he was married to Mrs. Maria Palmer, who died in Jan. 1915.

Mr. Leatherdale was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He enlisted Aug. 10, 1861 in Co. A, 15th Ill. Cavalry and was mustered out Aug. 25, 1864, thus serving his country for over three years. He was a good citizen and a man that was respected by all for his integrity.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. G. N. Foster officiating. Burial was in the Loyal Cemetery.

The relatives from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Clem Miles, Bentley, Canada and Miss Laura Omro of Minneapolis.
