Welsh, William (22 SEP 1830 - 10 Apr 1915)

Mr. Wm. Welsh, one of Loyal's well known and highly esteemed citizens, answered the death call last Saturday morning, April 10, 1915, at his farm home a mile and one-half northeast of our village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.), aged eighty-four years, six months and nineteen days.

Deceased was born in the town of Redding, Schyler Co. (formerly Stubent Co.), N.Y., Sept, 22, 1830, where he lived until sixteen years of age. IN 1846 he came to Dodge County, Wis. with his parents. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Niver on March 23, 1852, the marriage taking place at Dodge Co., where they resided until 1864, when they moved to Loyal, Clark County and took up a homestead where he was still living at the time of his death. The union was blessed with fourteen children, four of which passed to the great beyond before him.

Mr. Welsh came to Loyal nearly fifty-one years ago, when this was all a vast wilderness, with no roads and the nearest trading post being Neillsville. Many a time he walked from his home to Neillsville, a distance of twenty miles, and purchased provisions for his family, which he had to carry home on his back. He cleared his large farm, doing the work mostly with an ax, as saws were then used but little. In later years, and as settlers became more thickly settled, he also worked at his trade as carpenter. For many years he was county surveyor and chairman of his town. He held the office as Justice of the Peace for 45 years and during this time never had a single judgment reversed. At the present time he was court commissioner.

The news of his death occasioned much sorrow, especially to those of his neighbors and friends who had known him for many years. He was well informed on all subjects of public interest and possessed a happy, contented disposition, having a pleasant greeting for everyone whom he met in the daily walks of life. In his death the family has lost a kind and loving husband and father and the community a man who will always be remembered for doing that which he thought was right.

He leaves to mourn his death his aged wife and ten children, who are, Mrs. Lydia Smith, Lakin, Kansas; S. D. Welsh, Ferndale, Wash.; Mrs. Carrie Tomlinson, Raleigh, N.D.; Mrs. Ella McGee, Cottage Grove, Oregon; John Welsh and Mrs. Marry Vetter of Perkinstown, Wis.; Mrs. Wm. Catlin, town of Sherman; Mrs. Rhoda Flaherty, grant Welsh and George Welsh of Loyal, George always making his home with his parents, also 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends.

The funeral was held from the farm home Tuesday, April 13th and the body laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery.
