Benedict, Adonijah (24 Dec 1833 - 22 OCT 1906)

Died, at his home in York, Clark County, Wis., Oct 22, 1906, Adonijah Benedict, of Bright's disease. Mr. Benedict was born at French Creek, Jefferson Co., N.Y., Dec. 24, 1833. He moved to Sheboygan Co., Wis., in 1845, where he resided until 1848 when he moved again to Fond du Lac Co., Wis. He was married Dec. 25, 1852, to Clarica Byrant. In Aug. 1862 he enlisted in Co. A. 21st Wis. Volunteers and served until the close of the war. In 1873 he came to Clark Co., where he has since lived. The 19th of Feb. 1900, "the grim reaper" took the wife and mother and she was laid to rest in the little cemetery at the Methodist Church, which she had long been a member. In 1903 he married Mary Smith, who with his five children, Sanford, Adelbert, Charles, Fred and Elsie, still survive him. Mr. Benedict was of a deeply religious nature and often said that he could hardly remember the time of his conversion, but those who knew him all testified to its thoroughness as witnessed in a consistent and active Christian life. He was one of the founders of the Methodist class at York, and for nearly 30 years he was class leader. Zealous of every good work he has gone to his reward, dying triumphant in the faith that one of the "many mansions" was his. The funeral services were held at the York M. E. Church Wednesday, Oct. 24th at 2 p.m., Rev. C. H. Towne officiating, the church being crowded with his old friends and neighbors all conscious that the influence of a holy life will not depart, even though the body doe crumble to the dust, the spirit goes to God who gave it. "Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?"

The above obituary was not received in time to be published last week and as he was an old settler we use it this week.
