Mildred Louise Cance 1920-2003

Mildred Louise Cance, 82, passed away April 2, at her son’s home in Menomonie.

Mildred was born July 10, 1920 in the town of Goetz—near Cadott—the daughter of Morris and Helen (Solberg) Christianson. She grew up in the town of Goetz and surrounding areas, attending the Finn school in Taylor and Ellingson School in Northfield. She was confirmed October 21, 1943, at the Northfield Lutheran Church.

Mildred was married to John Alexander Cance on October 5, 1940, at the Stanley Presbyterian Church. Mildred and Alex resided in the rural Stanley area and farmed until retiring in 1979. They then moved to Stanley.

Mildred will always be remembered as a very loving and giving mother and grandmother who always put others’ needs above her own. She always welcomed our friends as her friends and accepted our friends as good friends, and welcomed them into our home.

Mildred was a very active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanley, a member of the Stanley Area Historical society, was active with 4-H activities, and loved sewing, quilting, crocheting and gardening, and was known for her beautiful violets she grew and the delicious Apple Pies she made.

Mildred is survived by her children, Duane (Carol) Cance of Fall Creek, Carole (Fred) Roberts of Stewartville, Minnn., Richard (Jean) Cance of Boyd and Kenneth (Darlene) Cance of Menomonie; her grandchildren, Daniel (Arlene) Roberts, Rebecca (Gary) Manske, Susan (Anthony) Bauer, Steven (Tara) Cance, Aaron (Kathryn) Cance, Adam, Jessica, Jon, Alexander and Andrew Cance, her great-grandchildren, Ashley Hohman, Austin Cance, Tyler and Melanie Bauer, Heather, Nicole and Andrew Manske, Amanda and Victoria Roberts; and her sisters, Laura Waller of Hixton, Mable Hanson of Pigeon Falls, and Esther (Gib) Mathison of Stanley.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Helen Christianson; her husband, Alex in 2001; her brothers, Clifford, Harry, Lloyd, Melvin and Herman; and one sister, Myrtle.

Funeral services were held April 5 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanley. Pastor William Stewart officiated. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
