Kauffman, John G. (3 Jan 1894 - 24 Augl 1916)

John G. Kauffman, a young man who has made his home here (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) with his sister, Mrs. Alvin Truckey, for a number of years past, was accidentally killed near Bessemer, Mich., at an early hour on Thursday morning last. Mr. Kauffman has been employed as brakeman by the Soo Line for about two years. On the date above mentioned the engine was taking water and when the spout to the water tank was raised the unfortunate young man was struck on the head and thrown under the wheels of the train of ore cars and instantly killed. The body arrived here on the Friday morning limited train and was taken to his sister's home in the town of Reseberg. Mr. Kauffman was born at Sturgeon Bay, Wis., on Jan. 3, 1894. He came here as a young lad, attended Reseberg School and later attended Thorp High School for two years. No bronze or marble shaft, no splendor of ancient or modern toms and no play of immortal genius can adorn the memory of such a manly young man. His deed, their influence, and his pure aspirations are the monuments that will keep his name burning in the home and hearts of all while the flying moments are dimming with their dust and rust the inscriptions upon the brightest obelisk in the cemetery. He was a model young man, an exemplary character and a true friend. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Saturday morning from St. Bernard's Church, Father Neises officiating, and interment following in the Catholic Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Kauffman, and sister, Mrs. Alvin Truckey of the town of Reseberg, also another sister, Mrs. Gertrude Gorsegner of Newark, N.J., who have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their great bereavement.
