West, Harvey (15 MAY 1894 - 16 May 1915)

Harvey West, who has made his home here (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) for a number of years with his foster mother, Mrs. W. A. Burss, was drowned in Lake Winnebago at Oshkosh about nine o'clock on Sunday morning last. Mr. West was a student at Oshkosh Normal and would have graduated in June with the Manual Training Class. He had reached the age of twenty-one years on Saturday last. Mr. West was a graduate of Thorp High School with the class of 1912, taught school one year and for the past two years was fitting himself for better work at the Normal school. He was highly respected by all and his sudden death is deeply deplored. He was a member of the local Beaver Lodge. He leaves a sister, Miss Katie West, who resides in Chicago, a father whose whereabouts is unknown, and other relatives who reside in England.

The tragedy occurred about four miles from Oshkosh where Mr. West and a companion named Mitchell were in a small skiff, which was capsized by the waves caused by a stiff breeze. West started swimming for the shore nearly a half mile away and believing the distance too great returned to within fifteen feet of the boat when he evidently was seized with cramps and sank. Mitchell clung to the boat and was rescued by parties from shore in an almost unconscious condition.

C. E. Burss went to Oshkosh on Sunday night and returned here on Tuesday noon with the body, which was recovered from the lake on Monday noon. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from the Reformed Church, Rev. Stafford, M. E. Pastor conducting the services which were largely attended.
