100 YEARS AGO (March 2, 1901)

The 5-year old son of Herman Kohlhepp of Unity was frightened to death. Two black hogs which the boy mistook for bears scared him so much that he died a few hours later.

70 YEARS AGO (Feb. 27, 1931)

Lt. Bob Burns & Lt. Warburton, did a few air stunts with their army planes over the city on Sunday morning.

60 YEARS AGO (Feb. 28, 1941)

Shirtley Stone was chosen as Miss Stanley from 24 other girls. Other place winners were: 2nd-Marybelle Smoczyk,. 3rd-Mary Louise Lange and 4th-Letitia Schunk and Pamela Cyrtie.

Leaving next week for the Milwaukee Induction center are John Weyenberg of Stanley, Valentine Licht of Boyd and John Rogowski of Stanley.

50 YEARS AGO (March 1, 1951)

Father Edwin Knauf announced that a home will be built for the sisters of St. Anne’s school on the site of Barney Micke’s present residence.

Eugene Aumann sold his Stanley Bakery to Frank Meznarich Monday morning. Frank and his son Joe will begin baking immediately.

40 YEARS AGO (March 2, 1961)

John Mathwig was named the top scorer in the Cloverbelt conference boys basketball.

August A. Kranig, Jr, age 39 was Chippewa County’s 2nd traffic fatality on Saturday night when his car hit the bridge abutment.

25 YEARS AGO (Feb. 26, 1976)

Some of Stanley-Boyd high school students will appear on Channel 7's High Quiz Bowl and they are Sylvia Fisk, Wade Shilts, Bob Bernklau, Mark Peterson and Dick Plombon.

Matt Smoczyk was named to the Cloverbelt West all-conference squad. Mike Meadows and Scott Taylor were chosen for honorable mention.

10 YEARS AGO (Feb. 28, 1991)

Police Chief Thomas Thornton and Officer Chirs Kowalczyk will resign from the city of Stanley and take positions with the Chippewa County Police Dept.

Sandie Guthrie was named "Winter Fantasy" Winter Carnival Queen.
