Postcard: Sent from Granton, WI to Christian Rusten in Madison, WI (1912)

Christian Rusten immigrated from---------Norway in 1869 as a teenager, just a year after the Fourteenth Amendment provided citizenship to "All persons born or naturalized in the United States." All children born in America were then given citizenship status. Transatlantic steamships had cut the travel time between the two countries by more than half. About two-thirds of the sailors working on Lake Michigan were born in Norway and many were able to provide helpful information for the nervous new arrivals.

April 19th, 1886 Christian, having previously filed his intention to become a citizen of the USA, stood before the Honorable Louis K. Church District Court Judge of Beadle Co., SD Territory and gave his testimony showing his oath of allegiance. He was April 19th, 1886 Christian, having previously filed his intention to become a citizen of the USA, stood before the Honorable Louis K. Church District Court Judge of Beadle Co., SD Territory and gave his testimony showing his oath of alligence to his adopted country. Norton D. Wallerig and Isaac J. Neouren, both US citizens, testified to his residence within the Territory of Dakota for the required five years and confirmed his good moral character who behaved himself according to the Constitution of the USA. The mandatory two years had elapsed since Christian's declaration of intent. Having renounced all allegiance and fidelity to every Foreign Prince, ruler, State or Sovereignty, and to Oscar King of Norway and Tuerden, Judge Church certified his citizenship under the court seal. George Edw. Woodbury attested to the event and Christen left the Courthouse, an American Citizen.

King of Sweden and Norway

Oscar II became King on 18 September 1872, upon the death of his brother, Charles XV. At his accession, he adopted as his motto "The Welfare of the Brother Peoples". The King's family and Royal Court resided mostly in Sweden.  From the very beginning he realized the essential difficulties in the maintenance of the union between the two countries.

The Statue of Liberty

Liberty Enlightening the World is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor within New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886, the same year Christian Rusten was naturalized.  The statue was built in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade
