Tourigny, Denis (24 Augl 1837 - 31 OCT 1921)

Denis Tourigny, for many years engaged in the hardware business in Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., passed away at his home on the north side, Oct. 31, 1921. He was in the eighty-fifth year of his life, having been born Aug. 24, 1837, near Montreal in the Province of Quebec, Canada. When about 30 years of age he went to the state of Maines, where he worked in the lumber woods. A few years later he came to this state, working for a time as foreman in camp for George Lloyd. He then went into the hardware business, being in partnership for a time with E. E. Crocker; after buying out Mr. Crocker’s interest he continued alone in the business till about two years ago when he sold out to Powers & Wing and retired from active business.

In many respects Mr. Tourigny was one of the most remarkable men who ever lived in this community. He was very reticent about himself and his affairs. He took no active part in public matters, attended closely to his business and seldom expressed an opinion on thing that did not concern him. Yet he was a man of keen intelligence; he had read quite widely, not only on current events, but on matters of history and philosophy, and held very definite opinions on many subjects of world-wide interest; but he was careful never to thrust his opinions and conclusions upon others. He was extremely simple and economical in his personal habits, spending little on himself, but in a quiet and unostentatious way, he was liberal to those whom he knew to be in need. The public never knew of his liberalities, except that in Neillsville and for miles around many were enabled to build homes or make farm improvements by reasons of the credit he so freely extended to deserving people. He was a shrewd judge of men and could quite closely judge of those who deserved help, but of course occasionally helped those who did not deserve or appreciate it.

Deceased is the last of a large family of brothers and sisters. For about 16 years his niece, Miss Beragngene Tourigny, has been with him as his housekeeper, and looked after his personal needs. During the past few weeks his strength gradually failed and she was in constant attendance at his bedside. About a week ago her sister Miss Simone Tourigny came from Canada to stay with her.

Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery on Wednesday, an address of eulogy being delivered by Judge James O’Neill at the grave.
