VanVoorhis, Harriet E. (16 OCT 1835 - 31 May 1918)

Harriet Elizabeth Stafford was born in Decatur, Otsego Co., N.Y., Oct. 16, 1835 and was one of a large family reared on her father’s farm.

She was educated in the common schools of the vicinity and spent some time teaching after she grew up.

She was married Jan. 1st, 1856 to Leroy J. VanVoorhis and moved to the western part of the state about two years later, where they engaged in farming, residing in Ontario and Monroe Counties for some years, removing to Kendall, Orleans Co. about 1869, where they continued to live till 1884, when they sought fortune in what was then Dakota territory. After spending 16 years at different place in Dakota the family removed to Greenwood, Clark County, Wis. in 1899.

Two children were born to them, Geo. W., one of our mail carriers for fifteen years, and Elmer E., formerly of this city but now engaged in the grocery business at East Grand Forks, Minn. Since the death of her husband ten years ago, Mrs. VanVoorhis divided her time between her two sons and returned to Greenwood the last time a year ago.

Her health being poor, she was taken to the hospital at Marshfield March 26, and though she underwent a serious operation her health could not be restored. She continued to sink until she finally passed away in the morning of May 31st, 1918. Mrs. VanVoorhis had three great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her father’s family, most of who lived to be very old. Her mother died when about 100. When a young girl Mrs. Van Voorhis became a Christian and through all her long life she has been an earnest church worker and a faithful friend and loving companion. Interment was made in the Greenwood Cemetery, Monday June 3rd. Services were conducted by Rev. Dunlop of Hillsdale, Wis.
