Carter, Francis Marion (27 Apr 1851 - 24 Augl 1914)

Francis Marion Carter passed away at his home in this city on Monday, Aug. 24, 1914, from a complication of diseases, from which he had been a sufferer for the past two years. The news of his death did not come unexpected to his friends, as he had been constantly failing for several months and had suffered much from his affliction.

Frank Carter was born the only child of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Carter at Granville, Ohio, April 25, 1851. His parents died when he was a young man and later he came to Wisconsin and located with relatives near Wrightsville. He came to Clark County, Wis. in 1870 and settled at Staffordville, about two miles north of Neillsville. He followed several occupations while there, having drove a stage line, lumbering and farming. On Feb. 22, 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Turnbull. To this union one son was born, Claude J. Carter, of this city. Later the family moved to Neillsville and then to Greenwood, where they have since resided.

Mr. Carter was associated in several lines of business here and was well known over the county by many friends.

During the civil war he served nearly five months in the army until the close of the rebellion. He was also a member of the M.W. A., in which he was always an active worker.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist Church, Rev. W.T. Hendren officiating. The Greenwood Band, of which he had been a member for a number of years, conducted the cortege from the home to the church and thence to the last resting place.

Those from out of town who were here to the funeral are: Mr. and Mrs. Cornick and Richard Hubbard of Hayward, Mrs. Ralph Ferneau of Stevens Point, Mr. and Mrs. Paulson, Fred Raymond and Delos Raymond of Granton.
