Montgomery, Leonard H. (8 Jan 1874 –7 Jul 1915)

This community was greatly shocked last Wednesday afternoon to learn that Leonard H. Montgomery had met death at his home just west of the city (Neillsville, Clark County) by a gunshot apparently self-inflicted. Mr. Montgomery had been melancholy at times and the act was doubtless done under temporary mental depression.

He was born in Jefferson Co., Wis., Jan. 8, 1874, being the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Montgomery. He became a telegraph operator, following this line if business for nineteen years, at times going into framing when his health was poor. He was married in 1904 to Miss Georgia Halvorson in California; she with their little son, aged about 9 years, survive him.

Mr. Montgomery was an exceptionally fine operator and could always secure a position as such when his health permitted. For a time they lived in Barron County, where his wife’s people, who are prominent farmers, reside. A year or more ago he bought the Crandall farm on the west bank of Black River and expected to remain permanently on the farm, where his industry and interest in that line of work made them very comfortable. Besides his parents, two brothers, Ralph and Paul, and two sisters, Miss Nellie Montgomery, who lives in New York and Mrs. Nettie Dickinson, who lives in Utah.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. Church, Rev. L.B. Colman officiating.
