Walter, Mr./Mrs. Otto F. (60th Anniversary - 1933)

COUPLE WEDED SIXTY YEARS; ANNIVERSARY OBSERVED THIS WEEK

Mr. and Mrs. Otto F. Walter Married in 1873; Formerly Lived On Farm in Grant

On Tuesday, December 26th, Mr. and Mrs. Otto F. Walter, 310 South Grand Ave., celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

At her father’s home in 1873, Augusta Schoengrath, 18, became the wife of Otto Walter, 29. They late George Wilding, then justice of the peace, performed the ceremony.

A few days after the wedding, the couple set out for the bridegrooms’ parental home in Farmington, Washington County. The first lap of the trip took them to Marshfield. There was no road, and they went through the woods on a homemade sled. There were but two buildings in Marshfield then: a saloon and a combination hotel, restaurant and grocery store operated by Louis Rivers. The honeymooners spent the night in his establishment. The next morning they took the train for Washington County.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter made their home on a farm in the town of Grant now owned by Frank Sheild. They had seven children, five of whom are now living: Mrs. Albert Degener and Albert Walter, both of Neillsville; Mrs. Max Lange, St. Paul, Minn.; Otto J. Walter, Hillsdale, Mich.; Mrs. Pauline Belden, Dickinson, N. Dak.

In 1914 Mr. and Mrs. Walter sold their farm and bought their home on South Grand Avenue, where they are now living.
