Gravitter, John (Jan 1853 - Apr 1929)

John Gravitter, well known resident of our village passed into the Great Beyond after several months of suffering from cancer of the stomach.

Mr. Gravitter was born in Prussia January 1853. He grew to manhood in the land of his birth and was married there to Miss Amelia Roganske in 1882. A year later the young couple migrated to the land of promise, America. They established a home several miles west of Spencer and conducted their farm there until about 13 years ago. At that time they moved to our village and resided here continuously up to the present time.

Besides his sorrowing widow, Mr. Gravitter is survived by seven children. Two of his children preceded him in death. His living children are Joseph and Rudolph of Marshfield; John of Muskegan, Mich.; Mrs. J. P. Barney of Eau Claire; Mrs. Frank Herman of Wausau; Mrs. Joseph Wendel and Paul who reside here. A brother Fred lives near Milwaukee.

Mr. Gravitter will be remembered here by his many friends and acquaintances as having been a quiet, kindly man with a pleasant smile and word for everyone. He was Patriotic and imbued with a spirit of Loyalty to his friends, neighbors and the land of his adoption, the U. S. A. He will be greatly missed not only by his family but also by those he formerly came in contact with.

Funeral services were held Monday forenoon at St. Balthasar's Church, the Rev. Father Joseph Stenz officiating. Interment took place in the Catholic cemetery at Marshfield. The pallbearers were Jos Wedl, Joe Davel, Frank Bauer, Alois Graun. John Schuld and Leo Theisen.
