Martens, Frederick (23 JUN 1871 - 18 Feb 1927)

(Due to a bad microfilm of the left column, some of this obit was cut off)

Our community was shocked and ? last Saturday morning when it became known about town that Fred Martens had passed away suddenly Friday evening about 7:45.

He hadn't been exactly well for about a year, since the death of his, ?, whom he insisted on going to? He was ill himself with ? the disease had its revenge ? on all could see that he was not his robust self, but he still kept ? business and no one suspected that he was near the end.

He wasn't feeling well when he went to bed Thursday night, so on Friday morning Mrs. Martens insisted that he let Lloyd look after the business for the day and he stay at home, which he consented to do but remained ? and was up even for supper : after the evening work was?. Mrs. Martens sat down near ? and with the children around ? and visited. While they were ? he passed away, acute cardiac ? of the heart being the cause of death.

Funeral services were held at the Little White Church Monday, Feb. 21st, at 2 p.m., Rev. F. P. ? officiating, and Richard Helms, ? Sorenson, Henry Froland, ? Leffel, and Fred and Dick ? acted as pallbearers. The Order of ? of Medford were here in a group and escorted the remains to its final resting place.

Frederick Martens was born in ?, Wis., June 23rd, 1871 and was 55 years, 7 months and 15 days old at the time of his death.

When he was about 12 years old his parents came to Dorchester, Clark Co. Country and settled on their farm southeast of here. In 1904 he was united in marriage to Mabel Barker here.

? children were born to them, one dying in infancy, and five, three daughters, Mrs. McCarron (Gladys), Margaret and June, and two sons, ? and Harold, with their mother, survive him.

Besides his family he leaves one sister, Mrs. Fred Leonhardt of Abbotsford, who is the only one lieft fo the Martens family, which came to Dorchester more than 40 years ago. Fred Martens will be missed by us both old and young, for as someone said to us the other day and is so well describes him, "He was the friendliest man in town." We'll never forget his happy "good mornings" or whatever it might be and his kindly ? in all, big and small.

He had a host of friends who extend the hand of sympathy to the bereaved and May God comfort them, as he has promised to comfort those who mourn.

Those from out of town to attend the funeral were his sister and husband, Mrs. and Mrs. Fred Leonhardt, Abbotsford, Mrs. Marten's brother's wife, Mr. and Mrs. George Barker, Abbotsford, her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Peters and daughter of Fond du Lac, Clinton Moss of Auburndale, and George Meiers of ?.
