CLAYTON VINE FALLS TO DEATH WHILE AT WORK ON CHURCH

Farmer Drops Through Opening To Basement While Laying Lining For Floor

Funeral Rites Held Tuesday Afternoon

Victim Spent Nearly All Of Life On Pleasant Ridge; Survived By Widow and Two Children

Clayton Irvin Vine, son of John and Clara Vine, was born on the Pleasant Ridge in the town of Grant, Clark County on August 16, 1888 and died in Neillsville on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 26, 1932, aged 44 years, 3 months and 10 days.

As is known to most of the people of our community, Mr. Vine was volunteering his help along with that of several men of the community in the work of rebuilding the Pleasant Ridge church. While he was assisting in laying the floor-lining for the auditorium and working near the southeast corner of the building, he accidentally stepped back too far over the edge, and fell through the vestibule entrance to the basement floor level, where he was picked up a few seconds later by those who were working with him. Mr. Vine was rushed into Neillsville and died before he could be taken into the local hospital.

This tragic and what seems an untimely death has brought sorrow to the entire community, and all people are sincerely sympathizing with the members of the family in their great loss.

Mr. Vine has spent practically all of his life on the Ridge, growing to manhood on the farm, which has been his home until the present time, and attending the Reed School. While a young man Mr. Vine attended the University of Wisconsin and became a graduate butter and cheese maker, which trade he has used occasionally.

On July 30, 1910, he was married to Nettie Smith Osgood at Watertown, Wis. They lived at Columbus, Wis., for a short time, and also for a short period at Woodford, Wis., where Clayton was employed as a butter maker. Within two years after their marriage, however, Mr. and Mrs. Vine came to the farm on the Ridge where they have resided to this day.

To their union 4 children were born: Anita, now Mrs. Henry Garske of Wilton; Donald, at home, and 2 babes who died in early infancy. Mr. Vine is also survived by one step-daughters, Marion, now Mrs. Stanley Austin of Watertown, one sister, May, Mrs. Herbert Harriman of Alden, Mich., two grandchildren, and his wife Nettie.

While we grieve because of the loss that is ours, we are sure of his gain, and with faith and hope ** rest cut off. ***
