________________

(By News Herald Correspondent)

THORP-Sylvanus Sweet Warner, 92 one of the last surviving trio of Civil War veterans in Clark county, died at his home here at 10 o'clock last night. Illness, aggravated by his advanced age, had kept him bedridden for the past two months.

Arrangements are being made for a military funeral but no announcement of the time or other details has yet been made.

Born In NEW YORK

Born in Jefferson County, N.Y. on April 1, 1846 the son of Stephen A. and Elizabeth Sweet Warner, Sylvanus Warner came to Juneau County, Wis, in 1868, and had been a resident of the Thorp community for nearly 65 years at the time of his death. He was married on Oct.20 1866, to Phoebe Jane Warden. On May 4,1874 six years after they had moved from New York to Wisconsin, the family set out from Juneau County for Clark County, making the trip to Hixon Township by ox-team in 10 days.

They settled on a 160-acre tract of land and erected a log cabin in four days, living in it until 1878 when a larger log house was built. This home was the first built in Thorp Township, formerly a part of Hixon, after its organization.

Cleared 160 Acres

Mr. Warner cleared up the entire 160 acres and established a reputation as a breeder of Shropshires. One of the organizers of Thorp Township in 1876, he was a member of its first board of supervisors and was a member of his local school board for 16 years.

In 1877 he contracted to carry the mail between Thorp and Chippewa Falls. At that time there was no railroad between the two points, nor even a continuous road and his wagon was the first to travel the distance between Longwood and Boyd.

He was one of five brothers who represented his family in the Civil War, joining company F.of the 20th New York Calvary on Augl 10,1863, when he was 17. Although active for the duration of the war, he was not injured or captured-a reputation equaled by each of his four brothers in the service.

SERVED UNDER GRANT

His regiment served under General Grant for a time ,and one of the engagements in which he participated was that at Fort Harrison. He was mustered out of the service at Rockford, near Richmond, Va. on July 31, 1865.

Mr.and Mrs. Warner were the parents of five children; William, Abi, Elizabeth, Lucinda, and Susan. Susan, Mrs. W. R. Allen has been caring for her father during his illness. Mrs. Warner died a number of years ago.

Clark Counties two remaing Civil War veterans are Albert Darton, and Thomas Goodell, Loyal.
