Grobe Family, Edwin

About 1893, Herman Grobe left Germany for the United States in a steamboat, landing in New York. He had been a soldier in the German Army at one time. He married a widow, Ernestine Frank, who had two sons, Fred and Otto Frank. After arriving in the states, he purchased a tract of 80 acres in Section 36, Fremont Township, Clark County, Wis., now known as the Victor Seehafer farm, near his uncle, Emil Grobe.

In 1894 he sent for his family, which consisted of his wife, her two sons, Fred and Otto Frank, and their three children, Minnie, August, and Lena Grobe. Later children born to them were Bertha, Mary, and Edwin. Three of them are still living, they are Lena (Mrs. William Bealer), Bertha (Mrs. Edwin A. Meissner), and Edwin, all of Chili. They attended the Fremont Lutheran Church. After the death of his wife in 1920, he purchased eighty acres in Section 24. After his death in 1932, this became the home of his son Edwin.

Edwin Grobe was born July 13, 1902, in Fremont Township. He was educated in Clark County, attending the district school No. 2; and helping to clear and work his father's farm. He also spent some time out in the Dakotas, working in the harvest fields with his brother August. In 1927, he married Adelia Lustig, daughter of Otto Lustig and Anna (Schlinsog) Lustig. They began domestic life in the original log house, which was their home for many years. In 1933, the old original log house and other buildings burned, and the present buildings, now owned by Max Mahoney, were built. He and his family moved off the farm in the spring of 1941. They rented a house south of Chili, where he is living at the present. Before retiring he did construction work. His wife, Adelia, died Aug. 6, 1970 from cancer. They had six children, Verna, Florence, Elmer, Louis, Edward, and Carol, the first mentioned being born in the old original log house, and attending Forestside School.

Verna is the wife of Leo C. Roehl, a farmer and truck driver; they own 120 acres in Section 16, Twp. Fremont, Clark County, Wis., and have three children, Elroy, who works on his father's farm, Cheryl and Darrel (twins), who are in high school.

The are all active members of Christ Lutheran Church in Chili. Florence died when she was nine years old, from Brights Disease (1940). Elmer married Janice Kohl, and resides near Pittsville, Wis. His children are Michael, Debra Ann, and Susan. Elmer does construction work in the vicinity. Louis H., who is a high school teacher at Three Lakes, Wis., married Margaret Bolander, and they had five children, Gregory, Julie, Lori (now deceased), Jennifer and Jody. Edward, who lives in Oshkosh, Wis. is a City Engineer there. He married Loretta Lewis. They have one son, Kevin. Carol Jean, wife of Ronald Koepke of Marshfield, Wis., has two children, Sara and Sally. Her husband works in the Personnel Dept. at the Weyerhauser Plant.
