Gillard, James H. (1 December 1839 - 20 June 1923)

James H. Gillard one of the few surviving Civil War veterans of this locality, passed away at his home in this city June 20, after a long illness. He has been an invalid for over eight years as the result of a stroke of paralysis.

He was born in Erie County, New York, December 1, 1839 and was therefore in his 84th year of his age. He came to La Crosse in 1859 and came up to work in logging camps on the Cunningham Creek that winter, and worked in this vicinity till 1861, when he enlisted in the First Wisconsin Infantry and served three years in the Civil War. On his return he was married in Madison Octobert 27, 1864, to Miss Rossetta M. Flick who survives him, and who through the eight long years of his last illness has carefully watched over and tended him as he lay practically helpless. Soon after their marriage they came to Clark County, living 5 years on what is now the Otto Hantke farm; they then moved to Minnesota where they lived 15 years in town of Sherwood; then moving to Neillsville which has been their home since.

Mr. Gillard was an honest, hard working man and had no enemies. For years of his earlier life he was a member of the M. E. Church, and until it disbanded was a member of the local G. A. R. post.

To Mr. and Mrs. Gillard 12 children were born, 8 of whom survive: Delbert Gillard, Mrs. Bauman and Mrs. Henry Ross of Neillsville, James Gillard, Derry, Idaho; Arthur Gillard of Watertown; Mrs. James Penny of River Falls; Mrs. Phil. Roland in Ohio; Mrs. Claude Garfield, Circle, Montana. The funeral was held Monday at the Methodist church , Rev. W. T. Scott officiating. Those from away who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. James Penny River Falls, Mrs. and Mrs. Elmer Selves and children of Watertown and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gillard of Watertown.
