Southard, John E. (3 OCT 1884 - 17 APR 1924)

John E. Southard died at Seattle, Wash., Apr. 17, 1924, aged 39 years, 6 months and 14 days. He went to Seattle last September and worked for a time in a saw mill before he was taken sick.

Deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Asa Southard, and was born in Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. He grew to manhood here and attended the city schools, graduating from the high school in the class of 1906. He was employed for a time by the telephone company and worked at various occupations. He was a member of the old Co. A. and went to the Border with the company during the trouble with Mexico in the summer of 1916, but was discharged at the beginning of the World War on account of having a family. He was married to Miss Lena Davis, two children, both of whom survive, were born to this union.

He leaves also three brothers, Will, Warren and George of Neillsville; and three sisters: Mrs. May Rose of Neillsville, Mrs. Sarah Elder of Seattle, and Mrs. Della Jennings of Aberdeen, Wash.

The remains have been sent here for burial and the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock this Thursday afternoon at the Congregational Church, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. The American Legion Post will attend and take part in the ceremonies.

George Thomas Southard was the youngest brother of my Great Grandfather John E Southard. In the early months of 1924 John was working in Seattle Washington at a sawmill. There he was struck in the abdomen by a heavy board or large tree limb. Much later, he became ill, the doctors suspecting appendicitis. During the surgery, they found that gangrene had set in and spread through his entire system from the injury. He died on the operating table, never regaining consciousness. I am in hopes to find a photograph of George Southard as I have never seen one, as well as any of his family members as I only have 3 photos of John and none of any other.

(Additional note from Michael)

John E Southard is my Great Grandfather. His father is Asa. Mother Helen.  John married Lena Davis and had 2 children. Maxine and Gerald. The later my Grandfather. I too now have a son, so this line continues.
