Cain, Ulysses C. (4 August 1910 – 9 February 1981)

A 70-year-old part-time worker for the City of Loyal was killed on Monday morning, February 9, when he was run over by a garbage truck

Dead was Ulysses C. Cain, of Loyal. According to Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff, Cain died of massive head injuries. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Hwy. 98, about 1 1/2 blocks of Loyal’s main street.

Cain had been riding on the rear of a garbage truck, which was driven by Ray Morrison, 33, Loyal. The tuck had stopped at the Jim Rueth residence and was proceeding to the Rybski home when the driver noticed that there was no material to be picked up at the Rybski’s. Morrison then began backing the truck.

When the truck stopped and prior to its backing up, Cain apparently left the large vehicle, slipped and fell into the path of the truck’s rear dual wheels.

Loyal police officers reported that they had tested the truck’s rear signaling device and found it to be working. Cold weather May have played a part in the accident as Cain was wearing heavy protection on his head to protect from the winds, thereby nullifying the warning signal.

Cain’s body was taken to the Rinka Funeral Home in Loyal.

The deceased was born on August 4, 1910, in Watson, Canada, and later attended Weyauwega schools. He then was a milk hauler for Carl Johnson and lived in the Town of Beaver. On June 12, 1929, he married Elsie Langfeldt in Neillsville ceremonies. The couple farmed for four years in the Marsh Rapids area and from 1933 to 1956 farmed in the Town of Beaver.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is one son, Wayne, Leavenworth, Wa.; one daughter, Mrs. Lester (Zada) Bloom, Loyal; one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Karnopp, Winifred, Mt.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one half-brother and one half-sister.

Funeral services were slated for this Thursday morning, February 12, from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal for Cain. The Rev. Joseph Kraly was to officiate with burial to be made in the Loyal Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Delbert and Herb Langfeldt, Hugh Johnson, Leland Hebert, Harlan Levasseur and Chuck Zeirieser.
