Richard Free was the son of Richard and Jane Free. He was born at Quebec, Canada, November 14, 1853. He left his parents farm at the age of 24, when he and his brother, William, came west in 1879. The first year or two he worked for the Black River Improvement Co. he then purchased land in the town of Weston and in 1881 was married to Hannah Armstrong. They lived on the farm in Weston for several years and then moved to a farm in York, which place has been their home ever since. For the last two years a son has worked the farm, owing to Mrs. Free’s poor health. He died Feb. 23, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 8 days.
Mr. Free was a man of fine character and habits. He was a kind husband and father and a good citizen in ever way. For many years he was a member of the York Center Methodist Episcopal church and also of the Neillsville Odd Fellows Lodge.
Mr. Free leaves to mourn his death his wife, two sons and five daughters. Three daughters are married, one living in California, one in Minnesota and one on a farm in York. He leaves also two brothers, John, in Shanghai, China, and Wm. Of Neillsville, and one sister, Esther, of Tinwick, Canada.
The funeral was held at the M.E. church in Neillsville Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. T. Scott officiating and the local I.O.O.F. taking part in the ceremony. He was laid to rest in the Neillsville cemetery beside his father and two brothers, Alexander and Arnold.
Trying to do some genealogy - my wife’s grandmother came from the Town of York, Clark Co. Wisconsin. We have the 1900 U.S. Census report. The grandmothers name was Ruby Ethel Free and she was nine years old at the time. She has passed so we have no knowledge about her family. The report gave her father’s name as Richard Free and her mother’s name was Hanni they had five daughters Layam - 17, Phoehi - 15, Leacy - 12, Ruby Ethel - 9 and Gerrude - 5. There were two sons Sidney - 13 and Herbert - 8. All of these children are probably deceased. I did not see any one listed by the name of Free on your list. Have you any knowledge regarding a cemetery in the area of the Town of York? The daughters are always difficult to trace. The two sons may have lived in the area however we do not know. Jack Snyder
