John Edward Stallard
John Edward Stallard, oldest son of John T. and Elizabeth (Wilson) Stallard, was born March 16, 1860, at Kingston, Wis. In 1866, the family located on a farm west of Humbird, and that was his home until he entered the employ of the N. C. Foster Lumber Co., first in the mill and later in the Big Store in Fairchild. He was head of the grocery department for upwards of twenty-five years. Then for a few years he was manager of the Farmers Store at Alma Center. Twenty-four years ago a move was made to Madison, where he engaged in the grocery business, retiring in 1933, owing to a heart ailment.
On Nov. 14, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Libbie Simons at LaCrosse. Four children were born to them, one daughter, Beulah, who died in infancy. Mrs. Stallard passed away June 30, 1940. Her husband survived her five years, dying in a Madison hospital on July 1, 1945, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 15 days.
Funeral services were held at Fairchild on July 5th, and interment was in the cemetery beside his wife and daughter. His three brothers, Burton, Henry, and Frank, preceded him to the Great Beyond.
Surviving are his three children, J. Earl, now on the faculty of the university, Mrs. Hazel Schuchardt, and Mrs. Marion Williams, all residing in Madison. His two sisters also survive, Mrs. F. A. Shute, Altoona; and Mrs. A. S. Huyck, Duluth. Mr. Stallard had twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
