Watenphul, Adam (29 Apr 1844 - 20 NOV 1924)

One of the pioneer settlers of the town of Cleveland, Jackson Co., Wis., Adam Watenphul, died Thrusday night, Nov. 20, 1924, at the home of his son George, after a long illness from dropsy.

Mr. Watenphul was born in Germany on April 29, 1844, and when three years of age, came with his parents to this country. The family settled in Milwaukee, where the subject of this sketch grew to young manhood. Desiring to take up land work, he came to this newly settled section, and located on a farm in what is now the northern part of the town of Cleveland. This is the late 1860's. He was married there to Miss Mary J. Mueller in 1871, and seven children blessed this union, all of whom survive, to mourn at this time the death of a kind and loving father. Mr. Watenphul was called upon to mourn the loss of his beloved helpmate after forty years of wedded happiness, her death occurring in 1912.

Mr. Watenphul and his wife were good examples of that pioneer stock, who by diligent industry made this section what it is today. Their home was one of neighborly kindness.

The funeral of this old settler was held from the Lutheran Church in Fairchild last Monday afternoon, conducted by Undertaker M. Kretschmer. The sermon was preached by Rev. Geske and Burgdorf, and a large congregation of friends were present to pay their last respects to the deceased. Burial was in the town of Cleveland Cemetery.

There are left to mourn his death four sons and three daughters: Henry, William, John and George, all of the home vicinity, Mrs. Emma Young of Eau Claire, Mrs. Mayme Crandell and Mrs. Alma Lubinski of La Crosse. The leaves also fifteen grandchildren, and numerous relatives and a large circle of friends.
