Smith, David E. (16 Sep 1855 - 5 Dec 1922)

David E. Smith died at his home in this village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) at an early hour last Tuesday morning, after an illness dating back to last March. Although his recovery was not expected, death came suddenly, his wife being alone with him in the house at the time. Mr. Smith has been confined to his home but a few weeks, and was able to be up and dressed the day before he died. He did not wish to retire Monday night, but wanted to remain in his chair. After considerable urging he spent the fore part of the night in bed, but towards morning became restless and got up, expiring a few minutes afterwards.

Deceased was born in Door County, Missouri, Sept. 16, 1855, son of John and Margaret Albertson Smith. His parents were pioneer settlers in the town of Garden Valley, Jackson Co., Wis., where he spent his early manhood. He learned the trade of miller and for many years he was employed in the old grist mill at Merrillan. Fifteen years ago he was united in marriage with Mrs. Amelia Hatch, and had since made his home in this village. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Jacob Eisenhart of Garden Valley, and five brothers, James, Albert, Steve, Charles, and Frank, besides the widow who mourns his death.

The funeral service was held at the home Thursday afternoon, conducted by M. Kretschmer, funeral director, and burial was in the cemetery in Garden Valley. Rev. D. C. Elmer preached the funeral sermon. Mr. Smith had been a member of the Modern Woodmen and for many years held the post of Sentinel in the local camp.
