Allen, Wallace (1848? - 18 Jul 1913)

This entire county (Clark) was shocked and saddened last Friday by the news that G.W. Allen of Loyal, Clark Co. had committed suicide by shooting himself at his home in that village. Mr. Allen had come up from his summer home at Waupaca, leaving his wife there. He apparently made careful preparations for death. He wrote a letter to his wife, one to his sister, Mrs. Miles, one to Cashier Harry Heaslett and one to Chas. Cornelius. In none of these did he give any detailed reason for his rash act. He showed, on the other hand, every indication of thoughtfulness and of a clear mind, giving careful details as to business matters he wished to have attended to. A year or so ago his only daughter died after a lingering illness; this was a hard blow to him. He had large business interest widely scattered in different parts of the country and as he grew older, looking after these properties became a great burden, and he became much worn out and tired, and there seemed to be no one who he could call to share the burdens.

Mr. Allen was about 65 years of age. He came to Loyal more than forty years ago and soon took a prominent part in affairs there. For many years he was one of the leading business men of the county. He was large hearted and generous, and yet active in business. His death is a loss not only to Loyal, but to the entire community. The funeral was held Wednesday at Loyal.
