Nicolaus Uselding was born 10 Jan 1871 in Belgium, Ozaukee, Wisconsin to Nicholas (1845–1932) & Cattin Maria Frederiss (1850–1932) Uselding. He was their first born son and oldest of their nine children. He died 3 Nov 1940 and his body was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the town of his birth near other family members.

Harry Uselding was born 19 Sep 1895 in Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. He died at the age of 76 yrs., 26 Nov 1971 and was buried in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, USA (plot section 6, row 5BT, site 22. He served as Private First Class with Company M, 47th Infantry.

He enlisted from Port Washington, WI, on 19 Nov 1917. He embarked from Hoboken, NJ, on 10 May 1918 aboard the SS Caserta.

While in France: He was promoted to PFC, 2 and then transferred from the 47th Infantry to the 329th MGB, and 3) wounded in action at Meuse-Argonne on 18 Oct 1918. Specifically, he suffered a gun shot wound to the left buttock. He departed Brest, France, on 26 Mar 1919 aboard the USS Rhode Island - a battleship. He was discharged on 8 Apr 1919 at Camp Grant, IL.

Services will be held Monday at 1:30pm at Olson Hall Chapel, King, with Rev Donald Bacinski officiating. Friends May call at Holly Funeral Home, Waupaca, after 6pm Sunday, and Monday at Olson Chapel from 12:30pm until the hour of services.

Burial will be in the Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery, King. Oshkosh Daily Northwestern 27 Nov 1971

The Great War

The regiment was formed from cadre from the 9th Infantry Regiment; the regiment was organized at Camp Syracuse on 1 Jun 1917. Initially assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, it fought in Europe during the Great War; within the division the regiment was part of Brigadier General Benjamin Andrew Poore's 7th Infantry Brigade. By May 1918, the regiment arrived at Brest, France, training until July. In late July, the regiment along with the rest of 7th Infantry Brigade, was briefly attached to the VII French Army Corps near Bois du Chitelet; it was then sent to bolster the beleaguered 42nd Division at Ourcq. In early August, the regiment fought near Bazoches-sur-Vesles during the Second Battle of the Marne. In September and October 1918, the regiment fought near Cuisy, Septsarges, and Brieulles-sur-Meuse; during this period of time Colonel Troy H. Middleton took command of the regiment, having previously commanded the regiment's 1st Battalion. Wikipedia

The final assault on the Hindenburg Line began with the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, launched by French and American troops on 26 September. The following week, co-operating French and American units broke through in Champagne at the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge, forcing the Germans off the commanding heights, and closing towards the Belgian frontier.[219] On 8 October the line was pierced again by British and Dominion troops at the Battle of Cambrai.[220] The German army had to shorten its front and use the Dutch frontier as an anchor to fight rear-guard actions as it fell back towards Germany.

During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, a battalion of the regiment was commanded by Major James Stevens. During the battle the regimental surgeon, Major Harrison Webster, was killed
