DEATH OF LEWIS L. AYERS Lewis L. Ayers died on the 28th day of Sept., 1905 at 2:30 p.m. of heart failure, after a lingering illness of several months, of which he was a patient sufferer.

Deceased was born in the town of Columbia, Bradford Co., Penn., Jan. 8th, 1832. He came to Wisconsin and settled in Neillsville, Clark County in the year 1855, where he has since resided. He was married to Elizabeth Miller May 18th, 1860, who survives hime, and also five children, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and loving father, Frank, Charles, Ernest, Mrs. Louis Brillion of Lac du Flanbeau, and Mrs. M.F. Beaulieu of Neillsville. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 2 p.m., Rev. W.T. Hendren, who was an old friend and brother Odd Fellow, officiating. The funeral was conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which the deceased has been a member for about thirty-five years. He has, for the past forty years, been surveying and estimating timber throughout Wisconsin and has been county surveyor several terms.

Half an hour before Mr. Ayers died he had been out in the back yard doing some little work, but felt weak and returned to the house and seated him in a chair. He looked up and repeated the lines -- "Pity the sorrows of a poor old man, whose faltering footsteps lead him to the door." She complimeted him upon his ability to quote poetry, and left him. A moment later she heard his foot fall heavily, and ran to him, finding him breathing his last. The kindhearted husband, father and citizen passed away, with his wife and daughter at his side. He was much beloved and is greatly missed. (Neillsville Times)
