Cornwell, Orville (20 Dec 1831 - 5 Sep 1907)

Orville Cornwell, one of the old residents of this locality, died at him home in Pine Valley, Clark County, Sept. 5, 1907.

Mr. Cornwell was born at Theresa, Jefferson Co., N.Y., Dec. 20, 1831. He was married to Ann Elizabeth Palmer in Lewis Co., N.Y., Dec. 23, 1852. In 1866 they came to Neillsville and the next year moved to their farm, on which they have lived ever since. To them were born four children: Emmaline, now Mrs. E.J. Spooner of Lents, Ore.; Alice, now Mrs. H.E. Ferguson of Minneapolis; Adelbert of Livingston, Mont., and Leland who lives on the home place.

Mr. Cornwell was one of the best citizens, industrious, honest, and progressive. During his younger years he was active in all public affairs, being a supervisor of his town several terms and looking after the community’s interests n a most efficient and faithful manner. He was a leader in temperance reform, and in every movement for good citizenship, he was always found on the side of right. He was a prominent member of the Odd Fellows, having joined the order over forty years ago in the State of New York. Besides his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he is survived by his wife, who for nearly fifty-five years has been his faithful helpmate, not alone in the development of their farm and home, but in all the public matters in which he took an interest. To her and the other relatives are offered a community’s sympathy.

The funeral was held at the home Sunday, Rev. W. P. Burrows officiating, and the local I.O.O.F. lodge escorting the procession to the cemetery and observing the rites of the order at the grave.
