100 Years Ago (1897)

The “old settlers” of this vicinity are talking of organizing an old settlers club, to be followed by a banquet and ball, in the near future.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Burke on Tues., Dr. McCutcheon being in attendance.
 
Ex-County Superintendent G. F. Crothers has gone into the office of Grow, Schuster & Co. at Neillsville.
 
About six inches of snow fell on Sat. and Sun. last, putting the roads in fair condition and log hauling has commenced in earnest.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Oberle on Wed. of last week.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Carlson, of Eidsvold on Thurs. last.
 
John Kealiher, an old and respected resident of the Town of Thorp, died at his home south of Eidsvold on Tues. of last week, aged sixty-seven years.  Mr. Kealiher was an old army veteran and for many years a great sufferer from disease contracted while in the service. 
 
Mrs. Jennie Silsbe Waltermire, died at her home in this village on Thursday last, aged 46 years.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Neiman’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malecki.
 
Reseburg – Mr. and Mrs. Henry Coates are the proud parents of a nine pound boy which arrived Sun. afternoon.
 
Miss Nia Knebel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Knebel, and Mr. Clifford Downing were united in marriage by Father Downing at Owen on Jan. 7th.
 
Valentine Kulik, 72, died quite suddenly at his home in this village on Wed. Morning, Jan. 11th.
 
Adolph Johnson for many years a resident here, died at his home at St. Paul, to which city he moved about three years ago, on Wed. of last week.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Frank Plucinski, 93, former resident and merchant in Thorp about twenty-five years ago, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Floyd Springer at Madison on Jan. 17, 1947. – James Bogumill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Bogumill, of Thorp, has purchased Keith’s Market from Keith Ungrodt at Medford and expects to take possession on Feb. 2nd.
 
Born to; Mr. and Mrs. Kermit O. Cook on Jan. 17, 1947, a son at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls.
 
Bobb’s Mill – Frank Wilczek’s barn on the old Peter Pabich farm, was destroyed by fire Tues. morning.  The livestock was all saved as was some of the machinery.
 
Yellow River – J. R. Godfrey passed away at his home here on Sun. morning.  Burial was at Oxford, Wis.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Janicki are the proud parents of a baby boy born at the St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, on Tues. Jan. 14, 1947.
 
The Western Condensing Company of Owen is now engaged in an extensive building project which is designed to double the capacity of its present plant.
 
Gilman – John Godfrey, an aged resident of this vicinity died at his home on Sun. morning.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Pat Frinack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Frinack, and Jane Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Anderson, have been selected by the Thorp High Faculty to represent Thorp High School in the Elks Leadership contest sponsored by the Elks National Foundation.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Graikowski, rural Thorp, observed their 70th wedding anniversary on Jan. 19, 1972.
 
Mrs. Josephine Koltis, 70, died Thurs. evening at the Colby Nursing Home, where she had been making her home.
 
Following a Florida honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ray Thompson, who were married Sat. Jan. 8 in St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Rozellville, will live on Route 3, Stanley.  The former Miss Marlene Barbara Zellner, Eau Claire, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zellner, Stratford.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Ann E. (Lobacz) Jaskot, 63, Chicago, formerly of thorp, died Fri. Jan. 16, 1987.
 
Melvin (Jack) Boardman, 67, Thorp, died Sat. Jan. 17, 1987. – Cadet Martin J. Olson, son of Rev. and Mrs. Robert W. Olson, received academic honors and was placed on the Dean’s List for the first semester at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.
 
Bessie Manier, 94, a resident of the Town of Worden, rural Stanley, Died Sat. Jan. 10, 1987 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Mary Frances Strzok, 93, was born in Thorp on Oct. 25, 1893 and passed away at the Health Central of Buffalo on Sun. Jan. 4, 1987.
