Decisions, decisions….

Hewett Street bricks on the move, one place or another

The engraved bricks that had lined Hewett Street in downtown Neillsville until recently were laid to rest in Town Square Park last week.

But the city’s Parks Department is waiting before permanently setting the bricks that have the inscribed names of the families who had sponsored the downtown improvement, including the creation of the park, in the 1980’s.  Tom Green, Parks director, said he has tried to group the bricks, by family name, as much as possible along the walkway on the east side of the downtown park.  But Greene acknowledges that the preliminary lay-out may not be to the liking of some families, so he is asking that anyone not pleased with the brick placements or wanting any of them moved to call him at 743-7071 by Friday, August 18th.  The bricks will be permanently set the following week, he said.

In the meantime, the Neillsville Common Council, in its August 8th meeting, made a decision on what should be done with the remaining blank bricks that had been used as fillers in the former layout along Hewett Street.  The council approved the recommendation that the bricks be donated to the American Legion Hall Building project that is in the process of constructing a new Legion Hall and community center on the city’s south side.  However, there are conditions attached to the donation.  The bricks may not be used by Legion members personally and, if any bricks are not used in the construction project, they are (to) be returned to the city.

Last Wednesday, Tom Greene (right), Neillsville Parks director, was laying down the last of the engraved Hewett Street bricks along the walkway at Town Square Park.  Matt Thomas (left) and Tim Nielsen of the Parks Department work crew assisted him.
