Music has always been an integral part of worship-service.  To the Christian it brings the gospel message in song adding beauty and inspiration to the service and a clearer understanding to the worshipper.

The Senior Choir was started during the pastorate of Rev. Schmid and has continued to be an important part of the worship service.  During those early years each succeeding minister became the director of the choir.  Then in 1941 Mrs. John Harvey became the music director, conducting the Senior and the Men’s Chorus.  She also started the Junior Choir.  Under her leadership the combined choirs gave several concerts singing for the most part “A Capella.”  At this time the materials for the wine-colored gowns was purchased and the gowns were made with the help of the Women’s Guild and mothers of the choir members.

In 1953 the beautiful new gowns of gray material were purchased for the Senior Choir and the Men’s Chorus.

Some of the directors who have helped in the ministry of music through the years have been: Mrs. William Marquart, Mr. Mark Vornholt, Mrs. Heron Van Gorden, Mrs. Earl Ruedy, Mrs. Donald Dundas, and Mrs. N. J. Dechant.  At present, Rev. Koehler is directing.

The Men’s Chorus stemmed from a quartet composed of John Harvey, Rev. Benjamin Stucki, Mark Vornholt, and Ole Aspen.   In the beginning it was coached by Mrs. John Harvey.  Others became interested and under several directors: Mrs. Marquart, Dr. Sarah Rosekranz, Rev. Ben Stucki, and at present Mark Vornholt, have presented various concerts, and provided choral music for numerous occasions.

The Junior Choir has for some years been under the able leadership of Mrs. Albert Zank.  The Juniors fill an active role in the worship services of the church along with the other choral groups.

May we of Zion Church make every effort to give our choirs the support they must have to be successful.  “Serve the Lord with gladness.  Come before his presence with singing.”  Psalm 100:1
