Lil’ Bulldogs Running Club
Begins at Granton Area Schools

Lil’ Bulldogs Running Club began Jan. 26 as part of Granton Area Schools 21st Century Grant after-school program.  The program encourages active and healthy lifestyles for students by teaching and modeling healthy choices and encourages families to consider walking/running as a viable daily option.

Areas of the school and town have been designated as walking/running routes.  Volunteers consist of community members, high school students, school office staff, daycare staff, bus drivers, as well as Learning Zone and Vault staff.  Adults meet with students and lead them on their runs/walks.

Staff will award participants with incentives, including water bottles, charm bracelets, healthy treat tickets, shoestrings, charms for the laces, headband and T-shirts.

The kickoff event was held Jan. 18 during physical education classes encouraging students to participate and walk a cumulative total of 104.8 miles each (the equivalent of four marathons).  A culminating celebration will be held May 10 with a presentation by Olympic medalist Debbie Sullivan.

Anyone wanting more information or wishing to help should contact Theresa McConkey, 21st Century Grant director, at 715-238-5151.

Appreciation is extended to the Shopko Foundation, the Granton area schools physical education department, Security Health Plan, Granton Area Schools Athletic Boosters, and Marathon Kids for contributing to the club’s pedometers and incentives and the presentation in May.
